The 'daughter of the Danube' hosts a cracking marathon that passes through two UNESCO World Heritage Sites giving runners the chance to admire the panorama of the Bulgarian capital from both sides of the River Danube. The race attracts a modest 4000 marathoners - a big city race but without the overcrowding problem of more popular events. The weekend is rounded of with a magnificent firework display.
The race starts at the magnificent Heroes Square which is characterised by 24 sculptures of important historical figures from Hungary's history. It is a flat course with the exception of the inclines of several bridges and passes many landmarks such as the Parliament buildings, Buda Castle, Chain and Liberty Bridges, the Palace of Culline, the Great Market Hall and the idyllic Margareth Island. The marathon finishes near the start at City's Park.
