The Stockholm marathon is one of the biggest in Europe with around 21,500 entries every year. The race began in 1979 and has a unique starting time of 2pm on a Saturday afternooon. Stockholm, which is built on 14 islands is a magical place and has one of Europe's best preserved medieval city centres.
The course consists of 2 almost identical laps through central Stockholm. The route is stunning and is designed to highlight the city's wonderful location on the shores of the Baltic. There is lots to see including the Royal Palace, the City Hall, the Royal Opera and the Parliament buildings. The race finishes at the Olympic Stadium where no less than 83 world records have been broken.
